What is TPMS and How Does It Work?
TPMS, or Tire Pressure Monitoring System, alerts you when the air pressure in one or more of your vehicle's tires drops by 25% or more. This warning is indicated by a light on your dashboard resembling a horseshoe with an exclamation point in the center. Proper tire inflation is crucial for safe driving conditions. For the recommended tire pressure for your vehicle, refer to your owner's manual or ask us at Suncoast Auto Repair Inc.
The TPMS was developed to address accidents caused by uneven tire pressure levels. When the tire pressure warning light activates, it usually signals that one of your tires is underinflated. This is the ideal time to get a tire inflation service. The warning light might also turn on and off with temperature changes, as tire pressure decreases in cold weather and increases as temperatures rise. Regardless, it’s wise to check your tires whenever the TPMS light appears.
If the tire pressure warning light flashes for 60-90 seconds after starting your vehicle and then remains on, your TPMS may not be functioning correctly. Contact Suncoast Auto Repair Inc at 941-727-5506 if this occurs. We have the necessary service kit to repair your TPMS, including a grommet, retaining nut, core, and cap. If the TPMS sensor is faulty, it may need replacement. TPMS batteries typically last 100,000 miles or 7-10 years, and sensors can be installed on spare or seasonal tires as well.
There are two types of TPMS that can trigger the dashboard light:
- Indirect TPMS: This system measures tire revolution rates using sensors from the anti-lock braking system. The data is sent to the onboard computer, which compares the speed of each tire. If one tire spins faster than the others, it indicates underinflation, which is signaled by the tire pressure warning light.
- Direct TPMS: This system uses pressure sensors attached to each tire to monitor tire pressure, and may also provide temperature readings. The data is sent to a central control module, which analyzes it and triggers the warning light if tire pressure is uneven. Direct TPMS is more accurate than indirect TPMS as it measures each tire individually.
If your vehicle lacks a TPMS sensor or tire pressure warning light, retrofit kits are available to monitor the pressure of all your tires.
